Our Winter 2025 issue -- Palestine on Paper -- is edited by art historian Nisa Ari. The issue explores the role and the presence of paper in Palestinian history, society, and culture. Ari asks us to consider such questions as “In what conditions—and for whom—is paper a place for safekeeping and a place of potential, of imagination outside the confines of reality?” and “Which parts of Palestine have been preserved on paper and which parts have not?”
The delicate, haunting image on the cover is by Palestinian artist Dor Guez Munayer, a photograph of khobiza,a Palestinian plant before being pressed for preservation. Guez explains, this artwork “doesn’t perform beauty...it documents something else entirely: survival in the face of annihilation.”
