Hand Papermaking Board of Directors

Sid Berger has been making paper for more than 35 years. He gives many book-arts-related workshops, also publishing and speaking widely. He is presently leading an international group of libraries in the production of a thesaurus of terminology of decorated and decorative paper. He is a Professor at Simmons College, and the director of The Phillips Library at The Peabody Essex Museum.

Frank Brannon is a graduate of the M.F.A. in the Book Arts Program at the University of Alabama and is proprietor of SpeakEasy Press in Dillsboro, North Carolina. The limited edition, letterpress books that he produces are held in several special collections libraries in the United States and England as well as with private collectors.

Shannon Brock has been the Art Director of Carriage House Paper since 1996. She holds a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. She has taught papermaking at Montclair State University, BookWorks in Asheville, NC, and throughout the east coast. She maintains her paper mill and studio, Gaptoothed Studio, in Brooklyn, NY, and exhibits her pulp paintings and sculptural work nationally.

Zina Castañuela has been a graphic designer for over 25 years in Denver, San Francisco, and Chicago. She uses her experience in environmental and print design as the basis for her artwork in which she creates artists books and sculptures using handmade paper, silkscreen, printmaking, and letterpress. She has shown her work nationally and internationally. She is currently the director of design at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Jeffrey Cooper has been collecting private press books and paper objects for many years. He is active with various arts organizations dedicated to the study and collecting of books, paper, and prints. He is currently Vice President of Government and Community Affairs at the University of Pennsylvania.

Georgia Deal is the Chair of the Printmaking Department at Corcoran College of Art & Design. She has worked with handmade paper in different ways for over 30 years. Her work is collected and exhibited widely.

Susan Mackin Dolan is an artist and educator, and received her MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder in printmaking and papermaking. In 1984, with the help of Bernie Vinzani, she started the Picante Paper Studio at the Southwest School of Art. Over the last 25 years she has taught and been in artist residencies at many colleges, universities, and art centers. Her work has been widely exhibited and collected.

Jim Escalante is on the faculty of the Art Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he teaches courses in book arts and papermaking. He founded Iguana Press in 1978.

Susan Gosin received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1976, she co-founded Dieu Donne Press and Paper, Inc. in New York City. She has developed curriculum and designed studio programs at The New School, Rutgers University, and Amagansett Applied Arts. Her artist books have been exhibited and collected by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Library of Congress. In 2006, she received the Printmaker Emeritus Award from the Southern Graphics Council.

Ann Marie Kennedy works with handmade paper to create both wall-sized works of art and large-scale sculptural environments, and collaborates occasionally to produce paper for editioned book works. Ann Marie was a resident artist at Penland School of Crafts. She is currently a full-time faculty member at Wake Tech Community College in Raleigh, NC, and teaches workshops throughout the U.S. Her MFA is from the University of Iowa.

Anne Q. McKeown is the master papermaker at Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions. She received her M.F.A. from Yale University. She has taught both drawing and papermaking and has exhibited extensively. She has received numerous prestigious awards and commissions.

Julie McLaughlin has been making paper for over 15 years with an emphasis on sculptural work and wearable garments. Her studio, McJulie Studios, is located in Dysart, Iowa, where she makes paper, gives occasional tours, and teaches workshops. Her work is exhibited nationally and internationally.

Margaret Prentice began papermaking in 1971, co-founding Twinrocker Handmade Paper with Kathryn and Howard Clark. She studied printmaking at the University of Arizona (BFA: 1966) and the University of Colorado (MFA: 1980). She is currently teaches printmaking and papermaking at Univ. of Oregon. She has studied traditional papermaking extensively in Japan, and recorded indigenous papermaking techniques in Mexico. Her work is exhibited nationally and internationally, and may be found in many noted collections.

Andrea Peterson is an artist, papermaker, and educator, with an MFA from the University of Minnesota and a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. She teaches papermaking at Columbia College Chicago and Ox-bow, a summer school for the Art Institute of Chicago. At her studio in Indiana she conducts paper research and creates her widely-exhibited artwork and production paper that is sold internationally.

Amy Richard began her art career as a painter, 25 years ago. After several intermittent forays with papermaking, her sea-inspired paintings and drawings are now evolving into paper sculptures made from locally harvested kozo and other fibers. Richard also coordinates the Florida Invasive Plant Education Initiative at the University of Florida/IFAS Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants.

Gibby Waitzkin is an artist, papermaker, and photographer, working with natural fibers and botanical objects to create handmade paper compositions. She was the founder and president of the award-winning Gibson Creative graphic design and communications company in Washington, DC, and has been an integral member of multiple boards, including the Corcoran, the Nasher Museum at Duke, and the University of Georgia School of Art. She recently built an innovative "green" paper studio at her home in Virginia.

Eileen Wallace is the proprietor of Mile Wide Press and specializes in custom bookbinding and boxmaking. She is currently teaching at the University of Georgia, and has taught at many distinguished institutions here and abroad. Ms. Wallace is codirector of the Paper & Book Intensive. Her permanent residence is in Chillicothe where she works at the home and studio of Dard Hunter. Her work has been exhibited widely.

Beck Whitehead has been working with artist-made paper since 1984. Since 1985 she has served at the Southwest College of Art & Craft in San Antonio, Texas, and is currently Paper & Book Arts Department Chair. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally since 1972.
